Day One
Day one of the 2017 Neustadt Festival was filled with poetry and prose readings from visiting authors from around the world. Authors and students filled the Beaird Lounge at the Oklahoma Memorial Union located on the University of Oklahoma campus. The readings were accompanied by a discussion of 2017 NSK Prize winner Marilyn Nelson’s work.
Day Two
The highlight of day two of the 2017 Neustadt Festival was the Neustadt Night at the Museum where the Neustadt family joined the members of the 2018 Neustadt Prize jury to announce the winner of the 2018 Neustadt Prize. The evening was a warm and welcoming event with hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and music at OU’s renowned Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.
Day Three
The last day of the 2017 Neustadt Festival opened with a world-premiere dance performance of some of NSK laureate Marilyn Nelson’s poetry. Students from OU’s Contemporary Dance Oklahoma ensemble performed adaptations of poems from How I Discovered Poetry, Marilyn Nelson’s powerful Civil Rights–era memoir in poetry, with music and original choreography by Austin Hartel and Roxanne Lyst. The performers and choreographers joined in an audience discussion after the performance, and Marilyn Nelson concluded the morning’s events with her keynote talk.
